I am writing the history of Napoleon in response to a libel. It is an imprudent undertaking since this libel is launched by the first talent of the century against a man who, for four years, has been the target of the vengeance of all the powers of the earth. I am chained in the expression of my thoughts, I lack talent and my noble adversary has all the correctional police courts as his assistant. Moreover, independently of his glory, this adversary enjoyed a great fortune, a great reputation in the salons of Europe, and all the social advantages. He flattered even obscure names, and his posthumous glory will not fail to excite the zeal of all these noble writers always ready to be moved by the misfortunes of power, of whatever nature it may be.
