In 1952, the slim volume of poems "Mohn und Gedächtnis" (Poppy and Memory), bound in black linen, was published by DVA. The author, actually born Paul Antschel in 1920 in Czernowitz/Bukowina, was unknown to the literary public at the time. Today, these 56 poems, including "Todesfuge", his most famous, are among the most important of the 20th century; not least because they are among the earliest testimonies of a poetic confrontation with the Shoah in the Federal Republic. This theme, as well as Celan's disciplined and magically associative language, still allows us to read "Mohn und Gedächtnis" as a new discovery. Now, on the 60th anniversary, this volume is being reissued in a bibliophile format based on the first edition.
