Although few doubt Freud's high status among the great and modern Western thinkers, the relationship of his ideas to philosophy is not yet fully clear. In "Freud as Philosopher: Metapsychology After Lacan", Richard Boothby reads the views of Freud and Lacan from the viewpoint of Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and other modern philosophers and restores the philosophical position and dignity of Freudian metapsychology. Boothby re-evaluates Freud's theory and proves that the tremendous influence of his work on philosophy has been unjustly silenced until now due to its misinterpretations. Richard Boothby is an Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Philosophy at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland.
