Darwin, like his grandfather Erasmus and many of his predecessors, realized that the mere fertility of nature was a reason for the struggle for survival. In the struggle for survival, an individual that has inherited more beneficial changes has a better chance of surviving long enough to pass its beneficial trait on to the next generation. Darwin's theory was efficient and practical and was clearly established by 1839, but The Origin of Species was published twenty years later. Darwin was concerned about the reaction of Victorian Christians. But things went differently.
