Ernani's or Hernani's play is considered one of the most controversial plays in the history of dramatic literature. A play that provoked many controversies among theater enthusiasts on the first night of its performance. In this play, Hugo implemented what he had in mind as a theoretical theory about the school of romanticism, and the text, the introduction of this play, and the introduction of Cromwell's play are among the most important works of dramatic literature of the romantic period. Ernani was written in 1830 and in it, Hugo reviews a part of the political history of Spain in the early sixteenth century i.e. 1519.
